It's That Time of Year Again

Last year’s Santa-Dote entry was so popular I thought I’d do another one to give people refuge from the stress that sometimes comes with the holidays. I’m a Christmas fool, being part German I am prone to what I call Weihnachtsdelerium, so I am not here to diss it but to add to your cheer by making you laugh. A couple of these things have nothing to do with Christmas such as the following throwbacks to my childhood (and some of yours too if you were born in the 1960s)















I came across a Dragnet Christmas episode that was sweet and funny at the same time. Joe Friday and the gang have hearts just like the rest of us. The incongruity between their deadpan delivery and the holiday theme makes the show.

And for something different to ring in the new year, watch this performance by Babatunde Olatunji, the Nigerian drummer who brought his music and culture to the United States. My parents took my brother and me to see him and his troupe perform when we were kids (while my friends went to see the Ice Capades). Bummed at first that we weren’t going to see the ice show, what we got instead was thunderous, wondrous drums and singing and people who danced with FIRE. "Odun de!" is a New Year's song to celebrate the harvest and is one of my favorite songs

The beautiful gentleman you see above is living history. He was part of the only crew of African-American sailors to take a warship, the USS Mason , into combat during World War II. The Mason 's war record included its safe escort of convoys across the Atlantic and its exemplary service in the hunter-killer groups that finally destroyed the German U-Boats that had infested Allied waters. And for its outstanding bravery in guiding an important convoy to port in the thick of a huge storm. It would be nearly 50 years before the men would receive the commendations, (from Pres. Bill Clinton), that the convoy's commander had recommended. I know Mr. DuFau because the story of the Mason was on the cover of the second issue of American Legacy.
